Ljutomer is a town in Prlekija in the northeastern part of Slovenia. It is the heart of Prlekija (the capital of Prlekija) and the Municipality of Ljutomer. It boasts a rich cultural heritage. It is also known as the city of trotting, film and wine.

Lotmerk, as it is called locally, is known for the first Slovenian camp, which took place in August 1868; demands were made on the fundamental rights of nations, the official use of the Slovenian language and United Slovenia.

It also has a century-old tradition in the sport of trotting (a breed of horse – the Ljutomer trotter).

It is the site of the first film recording in Slovenia. In 1905, Karol Grossmann from Ljutomer made the first Slovenian film (short clips). To this end, the Grossmann film and wine festival is organized in Ljutomer every year.

From the heart of Prlekija came many important men who worked in Slovenia and some abroad: linguist Franc Miklošič, author of the first Slovenian film score Karol Grossman, poet and playwright Cvetko Golar, academic painter Ante Trstenjak and many others.

On the edge of Prlekija (Ljutomer) is a hilly area made of tertiary marls and clay, which is an important wine-growing area of ​​Slovenia.
